Day 4: Rotorua

Early in the morning we left Auckland for the 3 hour drive down to a small town called Rotorua. Rotorua is located on a huge lake with a volcanic island in the middle. We started off our day in Rotorua by taking a gondola up an enormous mountain...And taking a luge back down...
We then went off to the Wai-O-Tapa Thermal reserve. After a volcanic eruption 700 years ago, Wai-O-Tapa was formed, and sits just about 3-5 miles above the earth's crust. As a result, it's loaded with geysers, hot pools, and steam spouting out of every surface (much like Pooner). It also wreaks of sulfur, so the kids tried their best to cover their noses and stifle the stench.

At night we got to go to a Maori dinner show to experience some of the culture of New Zealand's native people. We at food from a rock over, called a Hangi, and a few of the students were invited on stage to learn how to do a "Haka," a war chant sometimes also done before big rugby games.
